SAMBA | Outpatient ◕ Office Based ◕ Non-Operating Room

A Message From The President -

I am delighted and honored to fulfill the role of President of the Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA).  I look forward to interacting and working with you, our members, our Board of Directors, and all the committee volunteers who make SAMBA a fabulous organization.

SAMBA was founded in 1985 by a group of very forward-thinking individuals. They recognized the evolving climate of anesthesia and surgery, and the need for unique training, preparation and knowledge to care for patients outside of the traditional settings.  We continue to thrive and innovate with SAMBA’s mission to be the resource for providers who practice in settings outside of hospital-based operating rooms.  We offer a community for those caring for patients in ambulatory surgicenters, non-operating room environments and office-based settings.

SAMBA’s goals are to advance the practice of ambulatory anesthesia, to promote high ethical and professional standards, to provide professional guidance for the practice of perioperative care of ambulatory surgical patients and to foster and encourage education and research.

Expertise in caring for ambulatory procedural and surgical patients is vital to improve outcomes and save resources given that more than 60% of all anesthetics are administered to outpatients.  During the past year as we struggled with the coronavirus 2019  (Covid-19) pandemic the role of ambulatory anesthesia was again in the forefront as a way to continue to care for patients when our inpatient colleagues were restricted and diverted to meet the needs of Covid -19 patients.

The future of SAMBA is bright due to our engaged members and our educational and networking opportunities via our webinars, statements, blog and didactics through our annual meeting and other specialized meetings we continue to develop and offer. I urge you all to reach out to me and SAMBA leadership and each other, get involved and share your collective expertise and knowledge.

I close with a quote from a controversial figure but nonetheless an inspirational leader:

"If you get up in the morning and think the future is going to be better, it is a bright day. Otherwise, it's not."  Elon Musk
